The photo above is by Alfred Cheney Johnston. He was a New York City-based photographer known for his portraits of Ziegfeld Follies showgirls as well as of 1920s and 1930s actors and actresses. Johnston’s work was used by Florenz Ziegfeld, famed New York City live-theater showman and producer, for advertising and promotional purposes for the Follies, and mainly consisted of individual or small-group shots of the Follies showgirls in their extravagant stage costumes.
This is a subject I'm going to look into further. A lot can be learned about costuming, lighting, and how to create a softness with the overall shot.
